DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Virtue Online Series\n  \nWhat is Just and Unjust is Usually in Dispute: How Can Aquinas Help?\n  \nFr. Robert Ombres\, OP\nPontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas\n\n  \n20 January 2022\n7pm CET / 6pm GMT / 1pm EST \n  \nThe search for the meaning and application of justice\, and the avoidance of injustice\, has a long history and is constantly in dispute. Aquinas has much to say about this central dimension of our moral lives in community. He is philosophically coherent and robust\, which makes his thought helpful in dialogue with others who do not share the Christian faith. \nFr Robert Ombres\, OP qualified as a lawyer before joining the English Province in 1970. He was the Order’s Procurator General from 2004 to 2011. He teaches moral theology and canon law at Blackfriars\, Oxford and canon law at the Angelicum (Rome). \n  \nThis is an online lecture. ("John Paul II: exception or illusion?") Prof. Andrea Riccardi DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, January 21\, we invite you to the next lecture of the 2021-22 “JP2 Lectures” series\, organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture at the Angelicum\, which will be given by Professor Andrea Riccardi (La Terza Università degli Studi di Roma). \nThe lecture\, entitled “John Paul II: exception or illusion?”\, will start at 10.30 AM (CET) in Aula 11\, at the Angelicum (address: Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Roma). \n  \nWas the pontificate of John Paul II an illusion or an exception in the light of the decline of Christianity between the 20th and 21st centuries? \nThe question concerns above all the charismatic aspects of Wojtyła’s papacy. The global world likes to identify the Church with the person of the pope and impose a charismatic fulfillment of this role. \nThe Church of John Paul II\, in its various dimensions\, was a relevant protagonist in the history of its time\, as in the case of the interreligious prayer in Assisi in 1986 or in the transformation in Poland and Eastern Europe. John Paul II began his pontificate in 1978 with an announcement: Do not be afraid! Fear is still one of the most prevalent feelings around the world. It was a direct message to the tired Western Catholicism\, intimidated  by the successes of secularization. But also to Eastern Catholicism\, humiliated by Soviet domination. \nIt was a geopolitical vision\, driven by a mystical passion. Wojtyła did not accept the Cold War division of the world. His pontificate was a time of Church extroversion. In this vision\, Europe occupied a central place because\, moving out of the realm of fear\, it set in motion profound religious and social processes\, fostering a new culture in the light of religious experience. \nJohn Paul II gathered crowds even in countries where Christianity was exhausted. He believed in the value of dialogue and encounter\, of coexistence between religions and different ethnic-cultural identities. He fought for a peaceful transition from the Cold War\, showing “strength of spirit”. \nWe should interpret his figure without isolating him from the history of the Church and understand the complex lesson of his pontificate regarding: culture\, messianism\, faith as a force of change for Christians\, the charismatic dimension of the Church with popular and Marian devotion\, but also with new communities and movements. He waited and worked to make the Jubilee of 2000 a great opportunity for the Church’s self-reform\, to “make the Church the home and the school of communion”. \n  \nRegister HERE \nProfessor Andrea Riccardi – born 1950\, in Rome. Italian historian\, scholar and politician. He is Professor of Contemporary History at La Terza University in Rome and has also taught at the University of Bari. A number of universities have granted him honorary degrees in recognition of his historical and cultural merits. Andrea Riccardi is known internationally for having founded\, in 1968\, the Community of Sant’Egidio. In the years 2011-2013 he served as Minister for International Cooperation in the cabinet of the Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. \nThe lecture will also be broadcast live:  \n\nThe lecture will be delivered in Italian. English translation will be provided for viewers. \n__________________ \nPlease note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, to take part in the lecture you are required to show a valid Green Pass or a negative test result for coronavirus. We also ask the participants to respect the sanitary procedures and cover their mouth and nose with a mask. \n  \nThe monthly open “JP2 Lectures” given by scholars from around the world are offered by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas – the Angelicum in Rome\, the Roman Alma Mater of fr. Karol Wojtyła. The guest speakers in the 2021-22 “JP2 Lectures” series are: John\, Lord Alderdice\, Jean-Luc Marion\, George Weigel\, Andrea Riccardi\, John Milbank\, Carl A. It turns out they have a lot to do with each other. AI and religion intersect in many ways\, but in this talk I will look mainly at how they connect ethically\, anthropologically\, theologically\, and politically. \nEthically\, there is much good to be done and evil to be avoided\, and much of the ground is already being covered by secular thinkers: there are clear issues with bias\, safety\, transparency\, privacy\, employment\, inequality\, moral de-skilling\, and so on\, but society would benefit from a more Catholic perspective too. Anthropologically\, AI raises for humanity the question of what makes us unique if our intelligence can be externalised and improved upon as AI does\, as well as questions of the significance of our embodiment\, finitude\, our psychological strengths and weaknesses\, etc. In theological terms there are movements that view AI as a potential god\, or that God is an AI in charge of the computer “simulation” in which we dwell\, or that we can create our own Heaven and New Earth through technology. At the same time AI can also help us express the image of God in us\, if we use AI to fulfils God’s mission for humankind. Politically\, AI also has the practical potential both to help solve many problems of efficiency and scarcity\, while at the same time risking being a totalitarian dream-come-true\, allowing the implementation a surveillance state\, and promoting or suppressing religion\, etc. \nThis talk will get to some of our root questions having to do with the interaction of technology\, particularly AI\, and human psychology and culture\, and how that connects to Christian and particularly Catholic religion. \nBrian Patrick Green is the director of technology ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara\, California. He has doctoral and master’s degrees from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and an undergraduate degree in genetics from the University of California\, Davis. He collaborates with organizations such as the World Economic Forum\, the Partnership on AI\, and the Pontifical Council for Culture. His work is focused on AI ethics\, the ethics of space exploration\, the ethics of technological manipulation of humans\, the ethics of risky emerging technologies\, corporate technology ethics\, and the relationship of technology and religion (particularly the Catholic Church). Green is co-author of the Ethics in Technology Practice corporate technology ethics resources (2018)\, author of the book Space Ethics (2021)\, co-editor of the Journal of Moral Theology special issue on artificial intelligence (2022)\, and co-editor of the book Religious Transhumanism and Its Critics (2022). \nThis is an online lecture. Neo-scholastics today returning to Integralism are the very people who tend to oppose the integral unity of nature and grace! In consequence\, they confuse an integral political order with theocracy and church authority with church power. Yet the rejection of ‘pure nature’ and a Thomistic insistence after Servais Pinckaers OP that true virtue derives from divine gift and our exercise of fraternal gift-exchange as immediate duty\, besides accumulated habit (overcoming the Aristotelian tension between public justice and private magnanimity)\, implies a different and more radical and genuine\, although more tempered Integralism: the only measure of a truly just politics is its enabling of the communion of charity. But can mere liberal democracy do that and can it prevent a slide into authoritarianism\, today ever more prevalent? If the social as community and site of reciprocity has priority over the political and the economic\, does not that imply their specific reconfiguring\, as more envisaged by CST in the Nineteen-Thirties? It may be time to ask once more whether subsidiarity implies distributism and corporatism\, and whether solidarity and dignity imply a society of ‘estates’ and ‘orders’ in a reconfigured sense\, besides Aristotelian mixed government\, rather than pure democracy. Today we need to re-echo Max Scheler (such a big influence on John Paul II) and Emmanuel Mounier\, in asking what a specifically ‘Christian Socialist’ or ‘Christian Sociological’ politics and economics might imply. Also following John Paul II\, we need to think more about how a correct Catholic internationalism can be matched by an integral incarnation of Catholicity within specific national and local cultures. The strange alliance of an ultramontanist and over-centralised church (as Pope Francis perceives) with liberalism and laicite within nations no longer looks sufficient and has contributed to Christian decline. \n  \nProfessor John Milbank – born in 1952 in Kings Langley\, England\, is an English Anglican theologian and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham\, where he is President of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy. He is the most prominent representative of the trend of thought known as Radical Orthodoxy. A characteristic feature of this movement is the crossing of the conventional boundaries between theology\, philosophy\, political and social theory. \nFor on-site participants: please register at:  \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/p2-lecture-prof-john-milbank-virtue-integralism-and-the-priority-tickets-249139361537?aff=ebdssbdestsearch&keep_tld=1  \nThe lecture will also be broadcast on-line: \n  URL:https://angelicum.it/event/jp2-lecture-john-milbank/ LOCATION:Aula 11\, Largo Angelicum 1\, Roma\, 00184 CATEGORIES:Academic Event,General Events ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://angelicum.it/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Milbank.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="St.%20John%20Paul%20II%20Institute%20of%20Culture":MAILTO:jp2studies@pust.it GEO:41.8959596;12.4875634 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Aula 11 Largo Angelicum 1 Roma 00184;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=Largo Angelicum 1:geo:12.4875634,41.8959596 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
