Content

This is the second part of a two year course that presents the students with basic Latin grammar using Ecclesiastical (Church) vocabulary. The aim of the course to provide the student with needed tools so that, with the aid of a good dictionary, the student can read church liturgical, philosophical and theological texts. The required textbook is John F. Collins, A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin (Washington D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press), which is available in the Angelicum bookstore and which uses exercises based on scriptural and liturgical texts of the Catholic Church. The approach is through English grammar, that is, it starts with a review of the parts of speech in English (noun, verb, adjective, etc) and the role of words in sentences (subject, direct object, modifier, etc.) and this understanding is used to comprehend the inflected Latin language. The motto of the course is parse or perish.
