Nature as Guide: Wittgenstein and the Renewal of Moral Theology

Fr. David Goodill, OP
Oxford University

May 10, 2022
Angelicum Aula Minor & Livestream

Language: English

Wittgenstein influenced a generation of philosophers and theologians, with works such as Fergus Kerr’s Theology After Wittgenstein showing the relevance of Wittgenstein’s philosophy for contemporary questions in theology. In his book Nature as Guide Fr David Goodill OP follows many of the insights of this earlier generation of Wittgenstein influenced scholars, to bring Wittgenstein into conversation with contemporary Catholic moral theology. Fr Goodill will present an overview of the main themes of the book and explore how Wittgenstein can help us towards the renewal of moral theology.

Fr David Goodill teaches moral theology for Blackfriars Studium and the University of St Joseph, Macau, and also taught seminarians for several years at St Mary’s College, Oscott. He has a doctorate from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland in Moral theology, and also studied at the Catholic University of Leuven, the University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge. His research centres on the dialogue between contemporary philosophy and moral theology, and on questions in fundamental moral theology. Fr Goodill has previously held the posts of bursar, vice-regent and acting regent of Blackfriars Hall and Studium. He is currently the Provincial Bursar for the English Dominicans.
