One of the more famous teachings in Thomas Aquinas’ metaphysics is that on the real difference between being and essence. The essence of a thing is, briefly, that which decides what kind of thing something is. The being of something, on the other hand, is an act, namely the act to be. This composition not only goes for material things in the physical world around us but also for immaterial finite substances; it could have been the case that they would not have been. Only in God we do not find this composition. God is pure act, a pure act of being. God does not have an essence over and above His being, then, or – put in a different way – God’s essence is being. From this vantage point, one can understand the superiority of being over essence and also Thomas’ teaching on the analogy of being: the being of finite things is being in an analogous sense to the being that God has, or rather is – He Who is being itself.
