Fourth Annual Thomistic Philosophy and Natural Science Symposium

In collaboration with the Thomistic Institute of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, Fr. Thomas Davenport, O.P. has organized the 2022 edition of this annual symposium, whose theme is “Complexity, Simplicity, and Emergence”. The symposium takes place in Washington, DC, from 13 to 18 July. This event is an opportunity for the experts in various sciences and in Thomistic philosophy to engage in interdisciplinary conversations on concrete topics, with this year’s theme focusing on the borderlines between physics and chemistry, and between chemistry and biology.

Both members of the Project for Science and Religion of the Angelicum Thomistic Institute and the Rector Magnificus of the Angelicum are speakers of this year’s symposium. Fr. Thomas Davenport, O.P. will speak on “Animate versus Inanimate Nature according to Aristotle, Aquinas, and St. Albert the Great.” Fr. Mariusz Tabaczek, O.P. will speak on “Metaphysics of Emergence and Downward Causation: An Aristotelian-Thomistic Approach” and engage with related talks by a biochemist and a cell biologist.
