The Annunciation: art exhibition

March 19 @ 6:30 pm

Twenty paintings depicting the Annunciation interpreted anew by contemporary painters will be presented for the first time in Rome on March 19, 2024. The vernissage will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Musei di San Salvatore in Lauro in Rome (Piazza di San Salvatore in Lauro, 15).

The Annunciation paintings presented at the exhibition have been created by outstanding painters invited to join the second edition of the “Let’s Paint Catholicism Again” project organized by the Angelicum’s St. John Paul II Institute of Culture and the Saint Nicholas Foundation. Each artist created two paintings: one in a format suitable for a church interior or chapel, the other of a smaller size for domestic prayer. The artists went through preparation for the work in collaboration with theologians, art historians and philosophers to ensure a deep understanding of the complexity of this profound topic.

“Let’s Paint Catholicism Again” is a project planned for twenty-one years, which brings together artists and intellectuals convinced of the need for a revival of sacred art. Its aim is to create new depictions of the main themes of Catholic devotion using an artistic language understandable for modern viewers. The project was inaugurated with last year’s exhibition of new versions of the ‘Jesus, I trust in You’ image. Starting from this year’s edition, the painters will be tackling one mystery of the Holy Rosary each year.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until April 13, 2024.
Opening days and hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10.00-13.00/16.00-19.00
Admission is free.
