Persuasive Theological Writing: Spiritual Memoir and Reflection

Course Description

Stories about our spiritual experiences can be greatly inspiring to current Catholics and to people exploring Catholicism. Theologian Servais-Théodore Pinckaers, OP, once wrote: “The more authentically personal an experience is, the greater its resonance in the human audience. Saint Augustine‘s Confessions bares this out.” This workshop will focus on the art and method of writing spiritual memoirs and reflections. It will invite students to see their own experiences in those of spiritual writers such as Augustine, Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton, CS Lewis, Dorothy Day, Ann Lamott and James Baldwin and prompt them to write their own narratives and reflections in response. This workshop is intended for all students who enjoy writing, would like to improve their writing skills and aspire to be published in Catholic online or print journals or speak publicly about their faith.
