New course on Sources and Methodology for the Study of the Pontificate of John Paul II

This Thursday, we are very glad to introduce a new course as part of the JP2 Studies program at the Angelicum: “Sources and Methodology for the Study of the Pontificate of John Paul II” conducted by Rev. prof. Andrzej Dobrzyński, director of the Center for Documentation and Research of the Pontificate of John Paul II in Rome.

The course will consist of three workshop meetings:
1. Sources of knowledge about the teaching and activity of John Paul II – Thursday, 28 October 2023, 2.30-4.15 pm
2. Methodology for the study of the pontificate – Friday, 29 October 2023, 2.30-4.15 pm
3. The pontificate from behind the scenes – Tuesday, 31 October 2023, 2.30-4.15 pm

The aim of the workshops is to present sources for the study of the pontificate using the collections of the JP2 Pontificate Center for Documentation and Research in Rome where the three meetings will be held. Students will be acquainted with information about the archives where documents related to Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II are kept and about publications, especially series presenting his teaching as pope, existing bibliographies, commentaries, essays and studies.
On the basis of this knowledge, a methodology for the study of the teaching and history of the pontificate will be indicated, consisting in the ability to reach the thematic texts and the ability to translate them in the light of the studies, taking into account the doctrinal, cultural and historical context. The same methodology can be applied to know and understand well the events of this pontificate.
In a way, this method also reflects the mode of work of John Paul II, which will be presented using the example of the archive of Sr Emilia Ehrlich, a collaborator of the Pope from 1978 to 2000.

The course will be held off-campus, in the JP2 Pontificate Center for Documentation and Research, at Via Cassia 1200, 00189 Rome.
