Theology in the 20th century

Course Description

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the main voices of twentieth century theology, presenting their vision in the context of the theological and philosophical debates of the time, and trying to emphasize the ongoing relevance of the their thought. Emphasizing the legacy of transcendental Thomism and the ressourcement movement, the class will explore the impact of these thinkers on the developemnt of systematic theology, but also on the church’s identity and self-understanding. Students will also be introduced to developments in theological methodology as exemplified by the thought of Bernard Lonergan, The course will also introduce some significant non-Catholic thinkers such as Karl Barth and Sergei Bulgakov.
