Markus Bockmuehl is Dean Ireland’s Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Keble College. Before coming to Oxford in 2007, he was Professor of Biblical and early Christian studies at the Universities of Cambridge and St Andrews, having also taught briefly at Regent College and the University of British Columbia, Canada. Past external research appointments have included an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (University of Tübingen), a British Academy Research Readership, and resident Membership at Princeton’s Center of Theological Inquiry.

Among his authored books are This Jesus (1996), The Epistle to the Philippians (1998), Jewish Law in Gentile Churches (2003), Seeing the Word: Refocusing New Testament Study (2006), Simon Peter in Scripture and Memory (2012) and Ancient Apocryphal Gospels (2017). His teaching covers a wide range of New Testament as well as ancient Jewish and early Christian studies, while his current research concerns aspects of early Christian eschatology (currently completing a book on the presence and absence of the exalted Jesus in the New Testament).
