Program Description

The Postdoctoral Program at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (PUST) offers the opportunity for scholars who have completed doctoral studies to continue their research in a specific area of study with one of the four Faculties (Theology, Philosophy, Canon Law, Social Sciences), or with one of the Institutes associated with the University (Ecumenical, Historical, Spirituality, Thomistic). The program allows for a variety of ways of participating in the academic life of the Angelicum community including research, participation in courses / seminars, serving as a guest lecturer, participation in public lectures / conferences, and possibly working as an assistant professor. 

Eligibility

Applicants must have received a Canonical Doctoral Degree in Theology, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Canon Law. Students with a non-Canonical degree are required to first present all transcripts and a Curriculum Vitae to the Dean or Preside in order to determine whether they might be considered for postdoctoral studies at the PUST. 

Application Process

 To be considered for a Postdoctoral position at the PUST, the candidate submits the following:

 1. PUST Postdoctoral Registration form (for the Faculty of Theology contact: [email protected])

a. Priests: signed and sealed by the Rector of the College of Residence in Rome

 b. Religious: signed and sealed by the local superior

c. Laity: no other signature is required

2. Curriculum Vitae (4 pages maximum)
3. Application Essay – 1000-1500 words (1.5 spacing; 12-point font), describing:
a. Commitment to research and education in the Catholic Church
b. Area of specialization and proposed contribution
c. Proposed research and activities
d. How the applicant might best use the resources available at the PUST
e. Project Goal / Output
4. Transcripts and Diplomas – Graduate, Licentiate, Doctoral Documentation [scans are fine for the initial review, but originals are required prior to finalizing the registration process].
5. Identification: Copy of Passport / Carta d’identità / Permesso di Soggiorno / Codice Fiscale (as applicable)
6. Academic Letter of Recommendation addressing:

a. Commitment to and understanding of a vocation in theological education;

b. Fidelity to the Church; [as applicable for non-Catholics / non-Christians]
c. Promise as a teacher and researcher in theological education
d. Personal qualities and spiritual formation
7. Ecclesial Letter of Presentation (on letterhead / signed / sealed):
a. Priests: a letter from their Ordinary
b. Religious: a letter from their Major Superior

Laity: a letter from a Priest / Bishop

Review and Selection Process

Applications should be submitted before September 15 (for the Fall semester) or January 15 (for the Spring semester). They will be reviewed by a committee composed of the Dean (or one of the Vice-Deans) and at least one stabile professor associated with the Faculty or Institute. (Others as determined by the Dean).

Registration

 To be considered for a Postdoctoral position at the PUST, the candidate submits the following:

1. The fellow registers as a postdoctoral fellow within one of the Faculties or Institutes of the University and is classified as an “ordinary” student.
2. Postdoctoral fellows are present at the PUST for a limited time – normally one semester or one year.
3. Postdoctoral fellows will receive a matriculation number, University tessera, and access to the library.
4. Postdoctoral fellows may participate in up to 4 courses / seminars per year approved by the Dean / Preside. Participation in courses from other Faculties must be approved by the Dean of that Faculty.
5. Each postdoctoral fellow will be assigned a mentor from the Faculty or Institute.
6. If approved by the Faculty Council, a Postdoctoral fellow may teach a course / seminar as an “assistente”.
7. Postdoctoral projects may include the following contributions, as approved by the Dean/Preside:
  • a scientific article / chapter in a book
  • seminar meetings for professors or/and students
  • course / seminar instruction in an established course
  • open conference online or in presence

Financial

1. Costs:
  • 250 euro registration fee initiating the enrollment process
  • 1010 euro per semester (the registration fee is deducted from this amount)

2. The postdoctoral fellow is responsible for housing, food, and all personal expenses.

Conclusion

At the conclusion of the program the fellow is requested to submit a short summary of their research to the Dean / Preside, signed by the fellow and the mentor.
