The course is a historical-critical survey of the biographical, historical, and intellectual factors shaping the papal magisterium of Pope St. John Paul II. Special attention will be paid to his pre-papal and papal development of Christian humanism as an alternative to the Marxist and utilitarian concepts of the human person and human community. English-language competence essential for participation in the course.

George Weigel – born 1951 in Baltimore, USA. American Catholic philosopher and theologian, author of over twenty books, among them the biography of St. John Paul II in two volumes: Witness to Hope and The End and the Beginning. He is Distinguished Senior Fellow and Chair of Catholic Studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C. George Weigel has received 19 honorary doctorate degrees, as well as the papal cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal from the Polish Ministry of Culture. His most recent book is To Sanctify the World: The Vital Legacy of Vatican II (2022).
