Appointment of Angelicum alumnus and professor as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco (CA)

The Holy Father has appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco, California, the Rev. Robert F. Christian, O.P., of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, currently Student Master of the “Western Dominican Province”, assigning him the titular see of Giru di Marcello. Fr. Christian attended the Angelicum from 1974-1975. He obtained a licentiate (1981) and doctorate (1984) in theology from the Angelicum and later was a professor at the same University (1985-1997).
He also served as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Theology from 1999 to 2014. He served as Prior of the Dominican community at the Angelicum. He was a peritus in the Synod of Bishops on the formation to the priesthood (1990). He is a member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission and, since 2013, Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. In addition to English, he knows Italian, French, Latin and Spanish.
