Dariusz Karłowicz awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of the Republic of Poland

We are proud to announce that Dariusz Karłowicz, Program Director of the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture has been honored with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Mr. Andrzej Duda, the President of the Republic of Poland, awarded him with this distinction “for outstanding contributions to social and charitable activities” and “for popularizing contemporary philosophical and theological thought”. The state awards were presented to persons of merit to the Polish state and society on May 7, 2024 during a ceremony at the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw. 

Dariusz Karłowicz (born 1964) is a philosopher, publisher, president of the Saint Nicholas Foundation, program director of the Angelicum’s St. John Paul II Institute of Culture, and initiator of many of its projects, including “Let’s Paint Catholicism Again.” In his research prof. Karłowicz focuses, among others, on links between philosophy and religion, as well as relations of classical thought and modern reality. In 1997, he received his doctoral degree at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with a thesis written under the supervision of professor Juliusz Domański. His book publications include: Socrates and Other Saints. Early Christian Understandings of Reason and Philosophy, which deals with the philosophical foundations of the ideas represented by the early Christians and the Fathers of the Church, and The Archparadox of Death. Martyrdom as a Philosophical Category, where he observes the theology and the reality of martyrdom through the perspective of the ancient philosophy of death and radical personal transformation. Karłowicz is also editor of the Thinking with St. John Paul II book series published by the Angelicum University Press. In the upcoming academic year professor Karłowicz will be giving a course on the ancient tragedians’ and philosophers’ approach to religion and politics at the Angelicum Faculty of Philosophy.

The Order of Polonia Restituta was established in 1921 and is Poland’s second-highest civilian state award. It is conferred on Poles and foreigners for outstanding achievements in the fields of education, science, sport, culture, art, economics, national defense, social work, civil service and for furthering good relations between countries.
