Fr. Gerald Musa: Communicating the Gospel in Nigeria

It is no surprise that Fr. Gerald Musa, a priest from the diocese of Sokoto, Nigeria, is impressing the world with his love for communication.  Growing up, his home parish was run by the Order of Preachers – the Dominicans. They taught him to love the Word as well as the joy of proclaiming the truth to others.

Fr. Musa earned a degree in communications from the Gregorian University and then obtained a Doctorate in communications from the University of Queensland, Australia.   In between earning degrees, Fr. Musa spent a year studying at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.  Fr. Musa looks at his time at the Angelicum with great fondness, speaking of the courses he took as truly enriching his seminarian formation and widening his theological perspectives.

The thought and methods of St. Thomas Aquinas in particular, have made a lasting impact on Fr. Musa.   Fr. Musa was inspired by the way St. Thomas drew from the thought and philosophy of his day in order to better teach theology.  In a similar manner, Fr. Musa sees himself drawing from the principles of communication in order to preach the Gospel. Fr. Musa even developed a course on “the theology of communication” which he teaches today at the Catholic Institute of West Africa.  Fr. Musa said,  “My time at the Angelicum gave me the background to formulate such a course as well as the deep conviction that theology and good communication go hand in hand.”    When he reflects on his time at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas it is with a heart full of gratitude.   Fr. Musa would highly encourage anyone to come to the Angelicum–even if only for a short time–to be enriched by all that the university has to offer.
