Pope Francis has appointed Angelicum alumnus and Missionary, His Excellency, Mons. Robert Prevost O.S.A. as new Prefect for the Dicastery for Bishops

Pope Francis has appointed Chicago native, Augustinian friar, missionary and Angelicum alumnus, Bishop Robert Prevost O.S.A. as new Prefect for the Dicastery for Bishops.

In 1987 he received his JCD from the Angelicum, writing on:  “The Role of the Local Prior of the Order of St. Augustine.”

Rev. Fr. Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois (USA). He completed his secondary studies in the Minor Seminary of the Augustinian Fathers in 1973, then received his Baccalaureate in Mathematical Sciences in 1977 from Villanova University. He made his Solemn Profession on August 29, 1981. The following year he received his Licentiate in Theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. In Rome, he received priestly ordination on June 19, 1982. He received a degree in Canon Law from the Angelicum in Rome in 1987. Upon arriving in the Augustinian Mission in Peru, he was Chancellor of the Diocese of Chulucanas (1985-1986); from 1987 to 1988, he served in the U.S.A. as Promoter of Vocations Ministry and Director of Missions of his Order in the Province of Chicago; returning to Peru in 1988, he directed the Seminary of his Order in Trujillo and, at the same time, taught Canon Law in the diocesan seminary. He was Prefect of Studies in said Seminary and Judge of the Regional Ecclesiastical Tribunal, as well as a member of the College of Consultors in Trujillo. He also directed a quasi-parish in the poor outskirts of the city. After 10 years of uninterrupted ministry in Peru he returned to Chicago because in 1998 he was elected Provincial of the Augustinian Province of Chicago. Then in 2001 he was elected Prior General, a position he held until 2013 for two six-year terms. In addition to English, he speaks Spanish, French and Italian.
