Thinking with St. John Paul II 2021-22 JP2 Studies Program in Rome – a one year program

We invite students, academics, religious and secular intellectuals to reflect on the heritage of St. John Paul II. You will be taught by outstanding experts in their fields in the philosophy and theology of this great Pope (including Rémi Brague, Francis Russell Hittinger, Archbishop Rowan Williams, George Weigel, fr. Jarosław Kupczak OP, Michał Gierycz), while as participants in the program you will learn to think with John Paul II about the greatest challenges of our day. We will ask questions about solidarity and community, modernity and tradition. St. John Paul II can help us understand the world in which we live!
After finishing the program, students will be given a certificate. Up to 50 ECTS points can be obtained while taking courses.

It is with great pleasure that the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas announces the inauguration of a new program of study with the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture, through the Angelicum’s Faculty of Philosophy.
The mission of the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture is to encourage and promote reflection in the light of St. John Paul II’s intellectual and spiritual heritage on the most pressing challenges faced by the Church and the world today.
With this aim in mind, the Angelicum will hold a year-long, interdisciplinary postgraduate program in Rome entitled, JP2 STUDIES.
FOR WHOM?
The program has been created for students from all over the world interested in deepening their knowledge about the life, work and teaching of St. John Paul II. The program is geared towards clergy, religious and laity alike, especially:
- seminarians, priests and members of religious communities,
- 2nd and 3rd cycle students (from universities other than Angelicum), as well as graduates,
- researchers and academics,
- catechists,
- journalists specializing in subjects of faith and the Church.
WHAT SUBJECTS?
During two semesters, the program will cover over 230 hours of lectures and seminars, including required and elective courses, in which the student will be able to obtain up to 50 ECTS credits. The courses will be grouped in three blocks:
- THINKING ON ST. JOHN PAUL II
Foundational courses covering the life and work of John Paul II, the times in which he grew up, as well as the most important elements of his teaching in philosophy, theology and the social sciences. Course offerings for the 2021/22 academic year:
- “JP2 – Life, Work and Historical Context” – Prof. George Weigel (Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C.)
- “JP2 – Philosophy” – fr. Dr. Cezary Binkiewicz OP (Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas)
- “JP2 – Most Important Theological Issues” – fr. Prof. Jarosław Kupczak OP (Pontifical University of John Paul II, Krakow)
- “JP2 – Social Teaching” – Prof. Francis Russell Hittinger (University of Tulsa) and Prof. Michał Gierycz (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, Warsaw)
- THINKING WITH ST. JOHN PAUL II
Additional lectures and practical courses organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture focusing on key issues and challenges for the contemporary world and Church in the light of St. John Paul II’s teaching:
These will include special lectures by visiting professors invited to the Angelicum:
- “Europe’s Philosophical Identity” – Prof. Rémi Brague (Université de Paris),
- “Philosophies of Modernity in the 19th and 20th Centuries and Christian Culture” – Prof. Marek Cichocki (College of Europe in Natolin),
- “Why We Need a Society Guided by Solidarity” – Archbishop Rowan Williams (University of Cambridge),
as well as:
- A theater workshop and production of Karol Wojtyła’s “Job”
- A tour of Poland “In the Footsteps of John Paul II” (Krakow, Wadowice, Warsaw, Gdańsk as well as other important locations),
- The opportunity to attend a series of open monthly lectures organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture – “JP2 Lectures”. Among the speakers for the 2021/22 academic year: Lord John Alderdice, Bishop Robert Barron (invited), Prof. Stanisław Grygiel, Prof. John Milbank, Prof. Ewa Thompson, Prof. George Weigel.
- ST. JOHN PAUL II CONTEXTS
Supplementary lectures – courses selected from the current curriculum of the Angelicum; the list of possible subjects determined jointly with the Deans of the Faculties of Philosophy, Theology and Social Sciences; these courses will help supplement and broaden the knowledge of the teachings of St. John Paul II in the wider philosophical and theological context.
COURSE LANGUAGE AND FORMAT
The courses will be held in English and will be carried out on a full-time basis and in-presence.
POSSIBLE COVID RESTRICTIONS
Depending on the health situation of Italy, the courses may be periodically held in a hybrid or even an entirely remote mode. (N.B. most of the 2020/21 academic year was in-presence instruction.)
WHEN TO APPLY?
THE FIRST EDITION OF JP2 STUDIES WILL BE HELD IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022.
Admissions run from May 18th to the third week of September 2021, according to the Angelicum academic calendar. (Note that during the month of August, offices are closed)
Angelicum provides organizational support and advice on issues such as submission of documents required by the University in the registration process, accommodation, and other student concerns.
