From its very beginning, the Faculty of Philosophy at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas has been bound up with the renewal of studies of the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas in the Church and in the academic world. The Thomistic tradition gives unity to the instruction of the Faculty, without detracting in any way from the knowledge of the broader history of philosophy in all its diversity.
The Faculty offers three cycles of studies: for the first cycle, the Baccalaureate (three years of study); for the second cycle, the Licentiate (at least two years of study) and for the third cycle, the Doctorate (at least three
years of study). The Licentiate degree corresponds to the European-style master’s degree.
The order of studies of the Faculty follows the Apostolic Constitution Gaudium Veritatis (2018). Since 2003, the holy See adheres to the “Bologna Accord” which has established the European higher Education Area,
seeking to achieve and maintain greater academic compatibility and comparability across Europe and beyond.
Since 2010, the Faculty has therefore adapted its offerings and consistently uses the certification of study according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
