As the first in the six semester sequence of Latin courses, this course introduces students to the Latin language, its basic grammatical outlines, and an elementary vocabulary.
This course will take advantage of both the “conventional” method of Latin instruction as well as the conextual-inductive method. The conventional method approaches the language conceptually through the explanation of grammatical principles, the memorization of paradigms, and exercises of Latin to English translation. The contextual-inductive method emphasizes aural engagement with the language through Latin narratives of progressive difficulty as well as listening and speaking exercises. Both methods work towards the ultimate goal of autonomous competence of primary texts without constant recourse to a dictionary. The main text is Ørberg’s Familia Romana. Latin I covers the first nine chapters of Familia Romana, while Latin II covers chapters 10 through 18
